Researchers and scientists from various nationalities wished to get together to share their knowledge and present their research work on the « importance of assessment in intellectual disability » and thus develop good practices in this field.

Indeed, genetic intellectual disabilities, amongst which Down Syndrome and other chromosomal diseases (William-Beuren Syndrome, Smith-Magenis Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Prader Willi Syndrome, Cri du Chat Syndrome…) need specific diagnostic tools for well-adapted assessments.

Several scientific fields and competences will be brought together during these days in order to improve:

  • Assessment of pain and how it is dealt with for people living with intellectual disabilities,
  • Adapted care and treatments for these patients who sometimes have pathologies which are associated with ageing (Alzheimer‘s disease…),
  • Assessment of the best adapted care to answer the specific needs of each patient (sleep, functional disorders, behavioural disorders),
  • Efficiency criteria of the clinical trials carried out or developed for these particular patients,
  • Coherence between the criteria of clinical assessment and research

For Professor Marc J. Tassé, chairman of the scientific committee of these days, « the meeting between the experts of the various fields (neurologist, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, therapists, biologist, clinicians and geneticists…) will help to improve our understanding of genetic intellectual diseases as well as how they are dealt with through assessment and care”.
